The retention period is the final phase of your orthodontic treatment and determines the final result, so this is a crucial stage of the process. Our doctors Dr. Borth and Dr. Choate, will explain the wear instructions, care regimen and treatment plan. Learn more below about this important phase!
Your Retainer
Once your braces come off, the final stage of your treatment begins. This phase, the retention phase, lasts for a minimum of 24 months and will allow your teeth to settle and make the jaw as stable as possible. During this phase you will use a retainer, a custom-made dental appliance to fit your new smile, and maintain the improved position of your teeth.
Just like your teeth, you have to care for your retainer as bacteria and plaque can build up and make your retainer less hygienic. The best way to prevent this from happening is to remove the retainer every time you brush, and using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, separately brush the appliance. You can also soak the retainer in denture cleanse or a cleanser made specifically for retainers for disinfecting.
